A certificate was a non-compulsory and advisory certificate given to BBFC films from 1912 until 1982 that contained content that might be unsuitable for younger children. In the certificate's earliest days, A certificates required that children be accompanied by adults during the film. In 1982, it was replaced by the PG rating.
