The latest version of the Brazilian Informative Classification system was made official on television in mid-2007, although it was already used on motion pictures, video games, and some television networks since 2006. Since then, the television networks themselves rate the shows, while the Department of Justice, Rating, Titles and Qualification (Portuguese: Departamento de Justiça, Classificação, Títulos e Qualificação) judges the content to guarantee that the rating is appropriate for that specific show. On broadcast networks, where the system is mandatory, the ratings are also translated in Brazilian Sign Language, and may also carry content descriptors. The icons must be shown at the start of each block of the show, and their respective promos.
Ratings
The Brazilian content rating system utilizes age-specific classifications (with the exception of ER- and L-rated programming), and consist of the following:
- ER: Programs with this rating are exempt from classification;
- L (Livre para todos os públicos): May contain content that is suitable for all audiences;
- 10 (Não recomendado para menores de 10 anos): May contain content not recommended for viewers under 10 years of age; this may include mild violence, mild language such as "damn", infrequent coarse language such as "shit" and "ass",derogatory words such as "pussy" and "bastard", intense moments and non-sexual nudity. examples include the theory of everything, thor, homeland, and transformers.
- 12 (Não recomendado para menores de 12 anos): May contain content not recommended for viewers under 12 years of age; this may include moderate violence such as a small amount of bloodshed,coarse language, sexually suggestive behaviour such as groping, masturbation,sexual harrassment and sexual innuendo and\or references, and obscene hand gestures. other accepted contents include verbal abuse, references to illegal drugs, and erotic scenes. examples include avatar, the matrix, and whiplash.
- 14 (Não recomendado para menores de 14 anos): May contain themes not recommended for viewers under 14 years of age; may contain a moderate amount of bloodshed,moderate sex scenes,vulgar language such as "asshat" and "dickhead", and offscreen,attempted or unclear illegal drug use,frequent coarse language and sexual nudity. examples include getaway, justified, speed, and family guy.
- 16 (Não recomendado para menores de 16 anos): May contain material not recommended for viewers under 16 years of age; this may contain strong violence such as rape,torture, gore,decapitation, high amount of bloodshed,sexual exploitation and\or coercion, intense sex scenes,production,supplying and\or trafficking of illegal drugs,use of illegal drugs,and very strong language such as "c*nt" and "c*cksucker". examples include we need to talk about kevin, fight club, the heat, and shutter island.
- 18 (Não recomendado para menores de 18 anos): May contain content suitable for viewers 18 years of age and older. can include explicit sex,strong impact sex scenes including group sex,incest,pedophilia,extreme bloodshed and gore, promotion of violence, inspiration of the use of illegal drugs, and use of illegal drugs during explicit scenes. examples include pulp fiction, martyrs, and the wolf of wall street.
