Council of Cinematographic Classification

Films and video games for release in Chile are classified by the Council of Cinematographic Classification (Spanish: Consejo de Calificación Cinematográfica), a central agency under the Ministry of Education.

Age ratings

Cinema

The following age ratings are provided below, according to law 19,846 of the Republic of Chile:

• Todo espectador (For all audiences); abbreviated as "TE". Equivalent to the MPA's G.
  • If the content of the film could harm the sensibilities of children below seven years of age due to conflating fantasy with reality, Inconveniente para menores de 7 años is appended to the Todo espectador classification. Equivalent to the MPA's PG.
• Mayores de 14 años (For audiences aged 14 and above). Equivalent to the MPA's PG-13.
• Mayores de 18 años (For audiences aged 18 and above). Equivalent to the MPA's R and soft NC-17. If "pornographic" or "excessively violent", equivalent to hard NC-17.

Content categories

The age ratings may also be supplemented by the following content categories:

• Educational content: those productions that exalt values of solidarity, freedom, love of neighbor and generosity, or that, by their character, deliver relevant knowledge about history, nature, technology, science or art.
• Pornographic content: the abusive or rude exposure of sexuality or the exposure of obscene images, with more or less continuous sexual interactions that, manifested in a strictly genital plane, constitute its main purpose.
• Excessively violent content: one in which excessive physical or psychological force is exerted and with cruelty over living beings such as humans.

Minors will not be permitted to excessively violent or pornographic content. On a side note, pornographic content may only be distributed at license cinemas.

Video games

These are the following age ratings given to video games by Chile:

• Especialmente Recomendado (ER): Especially recommended for children. Equivalent to the deprecated EC (ESRB)/PEGI 3/ACB G.
• Toda Edad (TE): Video game without objectionable content that can be viewed by people of any age. Equivalent to EC or E (ESRB)/PEGI 3/ACB G.
• 8 años o más (8+): Not recommended for children under eight. Equivalent to E10+ (ESRB)/PEGI 7/ACB PG.
• 14 años o más (14+): Not recommended for children under fourteen. Equivalent to T (ESRB)/PEGI 12 or soft 16/ACB M or soft MA15+.
• 18 años o más (18+): Not recommended for children under 18. May contain intense violence or explicit sexuality/nudity. Equivalent to M or AO (ESRB)/PEGI hard 16 or 18/ACB hard MA15+ or R18+. Video games not yet rated are given a default rating of 18+ regardless of their content.
