This is an incomplete (and constantly growing) list of films that been modified in order to receive a lower age rating. (This list does not apply for works that would have been banned if not censored.)

BBFC (United Kingdom)

As before, only cuts made to achieve a category should be listed here. Do not list compulsory cuts in any way.
  • 101 Dalmatians (live-action) - A single use of the word 'bloody' was dubbed over with 'blinkin' in order to receive a U rating.
  • Aadupuliyattam - 27 seconds of strong violence and horror removed to receive a 12A rating.
  • Absolutely Anything - Some strong language was removed on the film's theatrical release to receive a 12A rating.
  • A Christmas Story (2016) - A single use of discriminatory language was removed in order to receive a U rating.
  • Babylon 5: Messages from Earth - Scene of man wielding chainsticks cut to receive a PG rating.
  • Bad Man's River - Cut for an A (now PG) rating on original theatrical release. Released uncut with a 12 rating on DVD in 2003.
  • Can't Buy Me Love - The film received 1 minute and 14 seconds of cuts on its original theatrical release to receive a PG rating (this was before the 12/12A rating) in 1988. It was released uncut with a 15 on home video the same year.

  • Marmaduke - A single use of the word 'spaz' was removed in order to receive a U classification as opposed to a 12A.
  • Mrs. Doubtfire - A sequence of a chain of moderate sex references was removed on theatrical and video release for years in order for the film to receive a PG rating. The film was released uncut with a 12 rating in 2012.
  • Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 - A moment of moderate violence and two sequences of weapons display (knives) were cut to obtain a PG. There is no UK uncut version released.
  • Secondhand Lions - Shots of flick knives removed from theatrical release to receive a PG. Released uncut on home video with a 12.
  • The Wings of Honneamise - A scene of attempted rape was removed to receive a PG. Was released uncut on home video in 2015 with a 15 rating.
  • The Witches - Cut for a PG upon original release in 1990 to shorten some scenes which were considered particularly frightening to young audiences. Released uncut on home video with the same rating in 2000.

CBFC (India)

  • A History of Violence - A U/A cut was censored by 14 minutes.
  • Basic Instinct - A U/A cut was censored for strong sexual content, graphic violence and some language by 20 minutes. A U-rated version was further cut by 39 minutes.
  • Borat - A U/A cut was censored by 6 minutes.
  • Bridesmaids - A U/A cut was censored by 18 minutes.
  • Clerks - Profanity muted in order to receive a U rating.
  • Cruel Intentions - A U/A cut was censored for strong sexual content and some language by 17 minutes. A U-rated version was further cut by 34 minutes.
  • The Hangover - A U/A cut was censored by 32 minutes.
  • One Missed Call (English edition) - A U/A cut was censored, removing the majority of the film's violence and horror elements by being cut by 19 minutes.
  • Secretary - A U/A cut was censored for sexual content (even kissing was removed) and violence by 14 minutes.
  • The Sweetest Thing - A U-rated cut was censored by 33 minutes.

Eirin (Japan)

  • Antichrist - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters, presumably cutting some extreme gore and graphic sex.
  • Blue is the Warmest Color - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters, presumably cutting the graphic sex.
  • Carrie (2013) - Released in an edited PG-12 version in some theaters, presumably removing some strong violence.
  • Chappie - Some graphic violence removed in order to receive a PG-12 rating.
  • Dogtooth - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters.
  • Fifty Shades of Grey - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters which cut all explicit shots of bare breasts/genitals.
  • The Hangover Part II - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters.
  • Lovelace - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters, presumably cutting the graphic sex.
  • Savages - Released in an edited R15+ version in some theaters.
  • Ted - Released in an edited PG-12 version in some theaters, presumably removing some crude language/sexual humor.

  • Dead Alive - Heavily cut for a 16 rating on DVD. This version was made with further cuts from the 85-minute R-rated MPAA cut, taking it down to 80 minutes.
  • The Evil Dead - Heavily cut for a 16 rating on DVD.
  • Gamer - Heavily cut for a 16 rating upon theatrical release.
  • Hulk - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release.
  • Iron Man - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release by four minutes, however this proved unnecessary when an uncut home video release managed to get a 12 rating.
  • The Last Boy Scout - Released with heavy cuts for graphic violence on rental VHS and all DVDs for a 16 rating. An uncut version was only released on VHS with an 18 rating.
  • Maleficent - Cut for a 6 rating upon theatrical release. Remained cut on DVD, however was released uncut with a 12 rating on Blu-Ray.
  • Predator 2 - Cut for a 16 rating on DVD. Separate uncut 18-rated DVD and Blu-Ray available.
  • Sleepy Hollow - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release.
  • Snake in the Eagle's Shadow - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release and on VHS; oddly enough, when the film was rereleased in a 16-rated DVD collection, it had been cut even further.
  • Spring Breakers - Cut for a 16 rating upon theatrical release.
  • Virtuosity - Heavily cut for a 16 rating upon theatrical release. Rerated uncut in 2013 with the same rating.
  • The Woman in Black - Cut for a 12 rating upon theatrical release.

MDA (Singapore)

  • Adventureland - Cut for an M18 rating on theatrical and DVD release. Uncut version only available through Netflix and classified R21.
  • Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery - Cut for a PG rating on original release. Uncut version classified NC-16.
  • Basic Instinct - Heavily cut for a PG rating on at least one release. Uncut version classified R21.
  • Black Swan - Cut for an M18 rating on original release. No uncut release as of this writing.
  • Braveheart - Cut for a PG rating on at least one release. Uncut version classified M18.
  • Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story - Cut for a PG rating on at least one release. Uncut version classified M18.
  • The Fast and the Furious - Cut for a PG rating on at least one release. Uncut version classified NC-16.

  • Videodrome - Cut for a PG rating on original release. No uncut version as of this writing.
  • We're the Millers - Cut for an M18 rating on at least one release. Uncut version classified R21.

MPAA

  • A Dirty Shame - Due to the context of the film and the circumstances at the time it came out, it was heavily edited in order to receive an R, despite having content that had been seen in previous R-rated comedies. This is known as the "Neutered Edition".
  • American Pie - Re-edited some particularly raunchy scenes to avoid an NC-17. Unrated edition released on home video.
  • American Psycho - Shots of extreme violence and explicit sex removed to avoid an NC-17. Unrated edition released on home video.
  • Amityville: The Awakening - Originally rated R for "strong horror violence and for language", re-edited to receive a PG-13.
  • Basic Instinct - Particularly explicit scenes re-edited with different angles to avoid an NC-17. Unrated edition released on home video.
  • Body of Evidence - Graphic sex scenes were toned down/removed to avoid an NC-17 rating. Unrated version released on home video.
  • Bully - Scene involving a bully harassing a child and using multiple F-words edited to avoid an R rating.
  • Dead Alive - Heavily cut from 97 minutes to 85 minutes, removing extreme violence to avoid an NC-17. Unrated edition released on home video.
  • Eyes Wide Shut - Shots of explicit sex covered by digitally added figures to avoid an NC-17. Unrated edition released on home video.
  • The Fog - Longer shots of a man burning alive were removed in order to receive a PG-13. Unrated edition released on home video.
  • Freddy Got Fingered - Edited as a joke to receive a PG rating (the PG-rated cut is only 3 minutes long and included as a bonus on the DVD).
  • The King's Speech - Scene of man working through his stutter by using strong language edited in a PG-13 edition of the film. (The original scene had 18 F-words, the PG-13 edition has 1.) This cut was never released on home video.
  • Mortdecai - Re-edited in a PG-13 edition on its video on demand release to try to draw in a new market.
  • Perfect Blue - Shots of full-frontal nudity cropped, as well as some graphic gore removed and a rape scene shortened in order to receive an R rating. Unrated edition released on home video.
  • Rio - Originally rated PG for "mild off color humor". Re-edited to receive a G.
  • Robocop - Had to be repeatedly resubmitted to the MPAA to secure an R rating over an X, finally secured by adding comedic relief that toned down the overall impact of the film.
  • Sausage Party - Pubic hair on a pita bread's scrotum had to be removed to avoid an NC-17 rating.
  • Super Size Me - An 'educational version' was released with a PG rating specifically for schools, removing bad language and sexual references.
  • Treasure Island - Some violence was edited out for a G rating upon a 1975 reissue. Released uncut in 1992 with a PG.

OFLC (Australia)

  • Barbarella - Nudity censored in order to receive an M rating. No uncut version released.
  • Brüno - Sex scenes edited for an MA15+; uncut Blu-ray version classified R18+.
  • Grown Ups 2 - Some crude humor was censored in order to receive a PG rating. No uncut version released.
  • Hellraiser - Was initially classified R18+; distributor chose to censor/cut three minutes of graphic violence for theatrical release in order to receive an M rating. Released on home video uncut with the R18+ rating.
  • The Hero - Initially refused classification, but cut more than necessary from a censored R18+ version to receive an M rating in theaters.
  • Hot Shots! - A single use of "f***" was removed for both theatrical and VHS releases in order to receive a PG rating. Released on DVD uncut with an M rating.
  • Lionheart - Uncensored in theaters with an R18+; released on home video with graphic violence censored in order to receive an M rating.
  • Kung Fu Hustle - Some strong violence was cut for theatrical release to receive an M rating; classified MA15+ uncut on home video.
  • Mad Max II - Some graphic violence was cut on theatrical release to receive an M rating rather than an R18+.
  • Men in Black - Some moderate violence was cut to receive a PG rating for the theatrical release. Released uncut on home video with an M rating; this same uncut version is typically shown on Australian television with a PG rating.
  • Total Recall - Initially released with graphic violence cut on home video to receive an M rating. A special edition release was passed uncut with an MA15+.

OFLC (New Zealand)

  • Hellbound: Hellraiser II - Cut for an R16 rating upon theatrical release. Released uncut on home video with an R18.
  • The Muppet Movie - Fozzie Bear being menaced by a sailor with a broken bottle was cut to receive a G rating.

KMRB (South Korea)

  • Amelie - Cut for a 15 rating on home video.
  • The Big Short - Cut for a 15 rating upon theatrical release. Released uncut on DVD with an 18 rating.
  • The Hunt - Cut for a 15 rating upon theatrical release.
  • The Jackal - Cut for a 15 rating on home video.
  • Love Actually - Released in an "Asian edition" which was rated 15 on home video. Released uncut in 2013 with an 18 rating.
