The National Film Center (Bulgarian: Национален Филмов Център; romanisation: Natsionalen Filmov Tsentar), known in short form as the NFC (НФЦ), is the film classification authority of Bulgaria.
The NFC issues the following age ratings in the form of single Latin script letters (Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic script):
- A: Can be seen by anyone, but especially recommended for children.
- B: Film suitable for all (no age restrictions). Equivalent to G or PG.
- C: Not recommended for children under 12. Persons younger than 12 are not admitted unless accompanied by an adult. There may be sexual content, use of substances or scenes of violence. Equivalent to soft PG-13.
- C+: Not recommended for children under 14. Persons younger than 14 are not admitted unless accompanied by an adult. Equivalent to hard PG-13.
- D+: Not recommended for children under 16. Persons younger than 16 are not admitted unless accompanied by an adult. Equivalent to soft R.
- D: Only persons who are at least 16 years of age can be admitted. There are more sexual scenes, stronger scenes of substance use or more graphic violence than the expected content of a C-rated film. Equivalent to hard R.
- X: Only persons who are at least 18 years of age can be admitted. This rating is seldom encountered in cinemas. Film is naturalistically erotic. It costs more to release films or videos with an "X" classification by the NFC than the others as such content can be screened in licensed premises only. The X rating is also used for films of a graphically violent nature (e.g., Dawn of the Dead, Hostel: Part II, and Jigsaw). Due to the restrictions of the X rating, the distributor typically cuts these films for a D rating for release in Bulgaria. Equivalent to NC-17.
