The National Media Council (المجلس الوطني للإعلام‎) is an institute of the federal government of the United Arab Emirates. It was established in 2006.

Age rating systems[]

The National Media Council maintains age rating systems for cinema, video games, and printed material. Content that does not meet classification guidelines may be rejected. An age rating is determined based on the following classifiable elements of material:

  • Gambling (e.g. simulated gambling in video games)
  • Language (coarse or sexual language)
  • Sex & Nudity
  • Alcohol, Tobacco & Drugs
  • Violence & Horror

Cinema/Film[]

  • G: suitable for viewing by all age groups. Equivalent to G.
  • PG: suitable for general viewing but adult supervision is recommended. Equivalent to PG.
  • PG 13: children under 13 years old may be admitted only with adult supervision. Equivalent to PG-13.
  • PG 15: children under 15 years old may be admitted only with adult supervision. Equivalent to soft R.
  • 15+: only persons aged 15 and above may be admitted. Equivalent to medium R.
  • 18+: only persons aged 18 and above may be admitted. Equivalent to hard R and soft NC-17.
  • 21+: uncensored. Only persons aged 21 and above may be admitted. Equivalent to hard NC-17.

Video games[]

  • 3: From age 3. Equivalent to E (low end).
  • 7: From age 7. Equivalent to E (high end) and E10+ (low end).
  • 12: From age 12. Equivalent to E10+ (high end) and T (low end).
  • 16: From age 16. Equivalent to T (high end) and M (low end).
  • 18: From age 18. Equivalent to M (high end) and AO (low end).
  • 21: From age 21. Equivalent to AO (high end).

Literature and printed material[]

Literature and printed material age ratings are E (suitable for everyone), 3-5, 6-9, 10-12, 13+, 17+ and 21+.
