Office of Film and Literature Classification (New Zealand)

The Office of Film and Literature Classification uses a variety of ratings to classify media for consumption in New Zealand, which includes but is not limited to film, TV shows, video games, literature, and on rare occasions has even included things like caravans and T-shirts.

Ratings

• G - Suitable for all ages. Equivalent to G
• PG - Parental guidance suggested. Equivalent to PG
• M - Suitable for mature audiences. Equivalent to PG-13
• R13 - Restricted to 13 and over. Equivalent to soft R
• RP13 - Restricted to 13 and over unless accompanied by an adult. Equivalent to soft R
• R14 - Restricted to 14 and over. This rating was only used once for the book Into the River - since it has been reclassified M, this rating is not currently in use on any title.
• R15 - Restricted to 15 and over. Equivalent to medium R
• R16 - Restricted to 16 and over. Equivalent to medium R
• RP16 - Restricted to 16 and over unless accompanied by an adult. Equivalent to medium R
• R18 - Restricted to 18 and over. Equivalent to hard R and NC-17
• RP18 - Restricted to 18 and over unless accompanied by an adult. Concerning the content impact (particularly suicide) of 13 Reasons Why to older teens, an RP18 label was introduced for that matter. Both seasons 1 and 2 got RP18 ratings from New Zealand. Equivalent to NC-17

Trivia

• Titles which have been rated G, PG, or M in Australia (G or PG in Canada or U or PG in the United Kingdom) can carry the Australian classification when sold in New Zealand (albeit with some exceptions) and do not legally require a separate classification.
