PG12 is a rating from the Eirin.
Its corresponding color is sky blue.
This rating was introduced in 1998 (Heisei 10). In Japan, it is abbreviated as Rated-PG.
Although this rating corresponds to B of CERO, it is not comparable to CERO because the screening standards are completely different.
The PG-13 classification in the MPA applies to this category, but since the majority of films classified as PG-13 in the MPA are G certification in Eirin, the PG-12 certification in Eirin is closer to the R certification in the MPA.
Equivalent to PG-13 in the US as well as 12 in Brazil, 12(A) in the UK, and M in Australia.
It contains expressions that are considered unsuitable for those under 12 years of age, and this is where the adult-oriented expressions begin in earnest.
There are no age restrictions, so those under the age of 12 may still view PG-12 rated films. It is also often mistakenly believed that only those accompanied by a parent or guardian are allowed to view these films, but since the PG12 rating is a rating that recommends parental advice and guidance, it is not mandatory.
This category applies whenever there is misconduct by a minor. Back to the Future (1985) for driving without a license, AKIRA (Toho, 1988) for riding a motorcycle without a helmet, and Shoplifters (GAGA, 2018) for depicting shoplifting by a child.
Despite the lack of age restrictions, many Japanese filmmakers tended to stick to G to improve their image and avoided them, but the record-breaking hit of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train (Toho and Aniplex, 2020) However, with the record-breaking success of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train (2020), it became clear that PG12 films have no problem at the box office, and since then, the number of PG12-designated films has increased. Since then, the number of PG12-designated films has been increasing. In recent years, A Family (Kadokawa, 2021), Sickness Unto Death (Clockworx, 2022), Shin Kamen Rider (Toei company, 2023), and Golden Kamuy (Toho, 2024) have been classified under this category.
