The Recreational Software Advisory Council was a pre-ESRB videogame rating system formed in 1994. Unlike most rating systems, the content would be rated by individual category levels based on violence, language, sex, and nudity rather than age level. The software content would be rated from level 0 (all ages) to 4.

Levels of Descriptors[]

ALL - Suitable for all audiences[]

RSAC ALL

If a game has a level 0 in all categories, then it would be given this rating.

Level 0[]

  • VIOLENCE: Harmless conflict; some damage to objects
  • LANGUAGE: Inoffensive slang; no profanity
  • NUDITY/SEX: No nudity or revealing attire / Romance, no sex

Level 1[]

  • VIOLENCE: Creatures injured or killed; damage to objects; fighting
  • LANGUAGE: Mild expletives
  • NUDITY/SEX: Revealing attire / Passionate kissing

Level 2[]

  • VIOLENCE: Humans injured or killed; with small amount of blood
  • LANGUAGE: Expletives; non-sexual anatomical references
  • NUDITY/SEX: Partial nudity / Clothed sexual touching

Level 3[]

  • VIOLENCE: Humans injured or killed; blood and gore
  • LANGUAGE: Strong, vulgar language; obscene gestures
  • NUDITY/SEX: Non-sexual frontal nudity / Non-explicit sexual activity

Level 4[]

  • VIOLENCE: Wanton and gratuitous violence; torture; rape
  • LANGUAGE: Crude or explicit sexual references
  • NUDITY/SEX: Provocative frontal nudity / Explicit sexual activity; sex crimes
