The Restricted Cougar was created in British Columbia in August 1960. It was designed due to increased public demand for movie rating information.
In 1997, the 18A category replaced the Restricted category to be consistent with the Canadian Home Video Rating System, and thus the Cougar's traditional role was discontinued after 37 years.
