The Russian Age Rating System (RARS; in Russian: Возрастная классификация информационной продукции) is used for all types of media (films, TV, video games, music, etc.) released in the Russian Federation. It came into effect on September 1, 2012.

Age ratings

  • 0+: Media suitable for everyone without age restriction. (There is no content that would be harmful to children younger than six.) Equivalent to G
  • 6+: Media suitable for children aged six and above. Equivalent to PG
  • 12+: Media suitable for children aged twelve and above. Equivalent to PG-13
  • 16+: Media suitable for children aged sixteen and above. Equivalent to R
  • 18+: Media prohibited for children. Equivalent to NC-17

No children who are below the given age rating may access the material under any circumstance, and it is the responsibility of parents to not allow access of the material to underage persons.

Labels

Labels to indicate the age rating are required for all media released in the Russian Federation.

Standard variant

Color-coded variant

0+ rating uses black text on white background, while 18+ uses white text on black background. 6+, 12+, and 16+ correspond to traffic lights. While no longer widely used, the color-coded labels are still used by the PlayStation Store in Russia.

Controversies

The Sims 4 received an 18+ rating because it has portrayals of same-sex relationships, which are considered harmful to minors under law.[1]

Beauty and the Beast (2017) received a 16+ rating for featuring an actor (Josh Gad) playing as a gay character (LeFou) after it was approved for release in Russian cinemas instead of being banned outright based on a petition by a Russian MP.[2] For the same reason, Power Rangers received an 18+ rating (originally 16+) for release in Russian cinemas.[3] The high age ratings for the films are due to laws prohibiting homosexual propaganda directed toward minors within the Russian Federation.
