The Swedish Media Council (Statens medieråd) is part of the Ministry of Culture of Sweden. Its goal is to protect young persons from being exposed to harmful content. It is responsible to set restrictions for public viewing of films by children under 15 years of age.
Age ratings[]
- Barntillåten, which is often abbreviated Btl, means all ages are admitted. Some films rated R by the MPA can get this rating. Equivalent to G for movies and TV-Y or TV-G for television.
- Från 7 år means it is suitable for persons aged 7 and above. Under 7s should be accompanied by an adult. Equivalent to PG for movies and TV-Y7 or soft TV-PG for television.
- Från 11 år means it is suitable for persons aged 11 and above. No one under 7 is admitted and 7-10s should be accompanied by an adult. Equivalent to PG-13 for movies and hard TV-PG or soft TV-14 for television.
- Från 15 år means it is suitable for persons aged 15 and above. No one under 11 is admitted and 11-14s should be accompanied by an adult. Before 1 March 2017, children under 15 were not permitted at all. Equivalent to R, NC-17 or Unrated for movies and hard TV-14 or TV-MA for television.[1][2]
- A film rated "from 15 years" is still judged by the medieråd to be harmful to the wellbeing of children under 15 years.
- Barnförbjuden, which is often abbreviated Bfj, means 18+.
The guardian must be at least 18 years old to supervise the child in the movies rated 7, 11, and 15.
