Restricted (X 18+), or simply X, is one of the seven classification categories of the Australian film rating system. The symbol is the letter X enclosed in a square and, like R 18+ before it, the colour is black.
X 18+ classified films are restricted to adults, similar to Australia's rated R 18+ category. It only contains content that is sexually explicit in nature. That is, material which shows actual sexual intercourse and other sexual activity between consenting adults. What is not permitted in X 18+ are depictions of sexual violence, coercion and "sexually assaultive" language. Fetishes such as body piercing, "golden showers", bondage, spanking or fisting are also not permitted. Such material are likely to be classified RC.
It is illegal to supply or exhibit X 18+ classified material to a minor. Material that is classified X 18+ is forbidden from being sold or hired anywhere in the six states of Australia. Thus, they are available for sale or hire only in the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. This implies that X rated DVDs are rare. Importation of adult material from the territories to the states and possession of X 18+ classified material is legal. The Commonwealth of Australia Constitution forbids any restrictions of trade by any state or territorial legislation within its borders.
Adult material is filtered out of public search results in the Australian Classification website by default, unless the tick box for "Include adult and Refused Classification material" is ticked.
